History of Royal Coster Diamonds
In 1840, Moses Coster founded a diamond polishing factory in the vicinity of the Waterlooplein (Waterloo Square), not far from the River Amstel and the contemporary locations of the Jewish Museum, Hortus Botanicus, and the Rembrandt House Museum. Appropriately enough, he named the new business M.E. Coster. The company’s big break came in 1852, when England’s Queen Victoria hired the firm to polish and recut the Koh-I-Noor, one of the largest diamonds in known existence. Coster’s success with the Koh-I-Noor project sealed its reputation, winning the brand significant fame and numerous awards.
Over the next several decades, the company would attract more and more high-profile clients, exhibit prominently at a series of World Exhibitions, and see Martin Coster (son of Moses) named Consul General of the Netherlands by King William III. The major economic depression that hit the world in 1929, as well as World War II, would make times hard for the Coster company, but an influx of new investments in the early 1960s would see the company relaunched as Royal Coster Diamonds and usher in a new era of success that continues today.
