How the Sydney Explorer Pass Works

The Sydney Explorer Pass is a digital product that grants you admission to all of your chosen attractions. All you have to do is present the pass at the admission booth to enter. The attraction will scan your pass and let you in.

The Explorer Pass format gives you the choice of 3, 4, 5, or 7 attractions out of about 20 options. You purchase the type of pass in advance and can’t add more attractions later (so be smart about how many things you want to see).

The pass is best used through the Go City Card App. However, you can also opt to print out the pass if you’d prefer to be a little more low-tech.

The Sydney Explorer Pass is valid for 30 days after your first attraction visit, so you have an entire month to use all of your choices. You have one year from the date of purchase to activate the pass.

What’s Good?

Since all Go City Card products are exclusively digital, you don’t need to fret about holding onto a card or remembering a ticket booklet. All you need is your smartphone!

It’s very convenient to have easy access to the pass whenever you need it, and it’s even more convenient to be able to purchase whenever you’re ready. You don’t need to wait for processing and shipping, and you can pounce when the pass goes on sale (which is usually near major holidays).

The Go City Card program is a dynamic one. This means that they may add or drop attractions over time, including seasonal attractions. Something new is always being added! However, this also means that it’s vital to check the website before you use the product to see what the most current attractions are.

Your pass also comes with a digital guidebook, complete with maps, contact info, location, and operating hours. It’s a huge help when it comes to trip planning, and saves you a bunch of time when you’re trying to organize your itinerary.

You can also skip the line at select attractions, currently including the Taronga Zoo. This is useful during the busy summer months!

What Could Get Better?

It’s mostly a good thing that the Go City Card adds new attractions – it may be tough if they drop one you really liked. You can’t always rely on your favorite attractions to be available, especially far into the future.

The pass doesn’t usually cover special exhibitions or shows at places like museums or zoos, but if it does, the Go City Card website will let you know.

You can’t use the pass on your phone without the app. Some people may find this a detriment (especially if you are app-averse), but if you’d prefer not to download the (free) app, you can also print out the pass and guidebook.

Many other Go City Card products also include extra discounts on things like shopping and dining, but this isn’t an option in Sydney. This may change sometime in the future, but for now it’s kind of a let-down and slightly decreases the overall value of the pass.

Get Your Money’s Worth with a Sydney Explorer Pass

The Sydney Explorer Pass website is currently advertising a savings of up to 45% on combined admission prices (comparing the amount you paid for the pass with the amount you would have paid at all of your chosen attractions put together).

This can make it a little tricky to figure out what your actual savings would be (although you can sit down and do the math if you’d like). The best way to be sure you’re saving the most is to visit the priciest attractions with the pass, and pay for anything inexpensive out of pocket.

Tours and cruises typically have the highest admission prices, but in Sydney many things can be very expensive, so it’s always important to check. The Go City Card website will have the admission prices listed on their site.

A useful feature of the Sydney Explorer Pass website is their included “Savings Examples.” This aggregates a selection of real savings examples from actual customers, which can give you an idea of how much you might save.

Sydney Explorer Pass Insider Tips

The pass is good for 30 days, so you can actually use the product over multiple weekends. This is quite handy if you’re a local, or are enjoying a long vacation in Sydney.

Although the attractions are located throughout the city, they are roughly clustered into neighborhoods. If you want to sightsee more efficiently, do multiple things in Circular Quay, or Darling Harbour, etc., in one day.

Reservations are occasionally required for certain activities (usually cruises or other activities with fixed capacity). This will be indicated on the attraction’s page on the Go City Card website. In some cases, you may also be required to provide a credit card. They will not charge you unless you don’t show up.
