How the San Antonio Explorer Pass Works

The San Antonio Explorer Pass is a digital pass that covers admission to your chosen attractions. Step up to the gate, present your pass to be scanned, and you’re good to go!

The San Antonio Explorer Pass format offers 3, 4, or 5 options out of 21 total choices. You purchase the denomination of the pass in advance, and can’t add or subtract attractions later. Four of these attractions are considered “premium attractions,” and your pass will get you into your choice of one of these sites.

The San Antonio Explorer Pass is intended for use in conjunction with the Go City Card App. This app is free to download, but if you’d prefer not to use it you can simply opt to print out your Explorer Pass.

The San Antonio Explorer Pass is valid for 30 days after you activate it with your first attraction visit. You have one year from the date of purchase to use the pass.

What’s Good?

Go City Card products are available digitally, which means if you have a smartphone, you don’t have to worry about printing out your pass or waiting for your pass to be mailed to you.

Go City Card passes include a complimentary digital guidebook. This handy helper comes complete with attraction locations, maps, operating hours, contact details, and much more. It’s such a convenient tool to have at your disposal as you go about planning your trip, as having all this information in one place means you don’t have to research every site individually.

The Go City Card program is always changing to better suit the needs of its customers. This means various attractions are being added and/or dropped, including seasonal attractions. You never know what new attractions might have been added in the time that has passed since you’ve most recently used the product!

What Could Get Better?

The ever-evolving list of attractions available via the Explorer Pass can sometimes get a bit frustrating, though. It’s not fun to have planned to see a local attraction using your Explorer Pass only to discover that it has been dropped from the list of covered attractions.

If you’re an art lover and/or museum enthusiast, you will likely be disappointed to learn that the Explorer Pass usually does not cover special exhibitions.

If you intend to use the Explorer Pass on your smartphone, you’ll have to download the app. Not every visitor will really want to have yet another app taking up space on their phone. However, if you feel that way, please do keep in mind you can simply print out your Explorer passes instead.

Some travelers may also be unhappy that only one Premium Attraction can be visited with the pass. This can decrease the value of the product overall, as these attractions are clearly the most expensive in terms of gate price.

Get Your Money’s Worth with a San Antonio Explorer Pass

The San Antonio Explorer Pass advertises savings of up to 45% on combined admission prices. This compares the price you would pay for the San Antonio Explorer Pass to the amount you would pay at each San Antonio-area attraction if you were paying admission individually.

Unless you are 100% certain in advance of your visit what sites you want to tour, keeping track of the comparison-math can get to be a lot. As a result, a good means for making certain you’re maximizing your savings with the San Antonio Explorer Pass is to use the pass to cover the more expensive attractions and pay for the cheaper tours out of pocket.

The most expensive attractions in the San Antonio area tend to be those labeled as “premium attractions.” The smaller museums, tours, and exhibits typically do not cost as much.

If you’d like to look into these details firsthand, a great resource found on the San Antonio Explorer Pass website is the “Savings Examples” tab. This webpage lays out real-world customer savings, while offering up some excellent models for you to study as you plan out an itinerary that maximizes your trip savings.

San Antonio Explorer Pass Insider Tips

The San Antonio Explorer Pass is active for 30 whole days. This is a great benefit of the product if you have the ability to spread out your visits to various attractions, as it means you don’t have to try and make every attraction fit into a single weekend.

A great way to explore San Antonio, especially if it’s your first time in the city, is to go on a City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off tour. Your ticket for this guided bus tour will be good for 24 hours, and you’ll not only receive a terrific introduction to/overview of the city, but you’ll be able to get off your bus tour at a number of San Antonio’s most iconic attractions—some of which are even already included as options within your San Antonio Explorer Pass!

Some activities require reservations, and in some cases you might have to provide a credit card in order to book those reservations. However, you will not be charged unless you fail to show up for your activity. If the attraction you’re interested in does require an advance reservation, you’ll find it listed with an “R” on its Go City Card website attraction page.
