How the Rome Explorer Pass Works

The Rome Explorer Pass is a digital product that functions as the only ticket you need to all of Rome’s most famous sites, tours, and experiences. Just show up at the attraction of your choice with a smartphone, have your Rome Explorer Pass scanned, and you’re good to go. You won’t need to pay a thing at the door.

The Rome Explorer Pass comes in denominations of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 attractions. You must select your type of pass at the time of purchase, and you cannot change it at a later time. Typically, the Rome Explorer Pass includes your choice of over 25 unique Rome-area attractions.

The Rome Explorer Pass is set up to work best on your smartphone. All you have to do to access your pass is download the free app from Go City Card. If you prefer a paper copy of the Rome Explorer Pass, you can always just print it out at home before embarking on your outing.

After you buy the Rome Explorer Pass, you have a full calendar year to start using it. Once you start using it, it is considered activated and you have 30 days to enjoy all the best Rom has to offer.

What’s Good?

The Rome Explorer Pass represents the heights of modern travel-pass convenience. As a Go City customer, you don’t have to pay to have your Rome Explorer Pass mailed to you, nor do you need to go pick it up after you arrive in Rome. All you need is a smartphone!

This is not only convenient, it makes for a remarkably flexible situation. Since the Rome Explorer Pass can be downloaded instantly to your phone, it’s perfect for that spontaneous weekend getaway. Conversely, since you have an entire year to use it, the Rome Explorer Pass can be purchased whenever you find it at a discounted price online, and then saved to use whenever works best for you.

Each Rome Explorer Pass comes with “Go Line privileges” at selected attractions. This is an incredibly useful element of the card—it lets you skip the long lines plaguing many of Rome’s most popular attractions and enjoy fast-track entry into the venues you most want to explore. Go Line privileges currently exist at such iconic spots as the Colosseum, Saint Peter’s Basilica, and the Vatican.

As you plan your Rome experiences, make sure to monitor the official Rome Explorer Pass website to keep track of the most up-to-date information. You never know what exciting new attraction might get added as you anticipate your delightful Rome adventure.

What Could Get Better?

Despite its convenience, some customers report being disappointed that you have to download a new app just to use the Rome Explorer Pass on a smartphone. Do keep in mind, however, you can always simply delete the app after you complete your pass usage.

The Rome Explorer Pass designates a few big-name attractions as “premium attractions.” These premium attractions include the Colosseum, Saint Peter’s Dome guided climb tour, Saint Peter’s Basilica, and the pasta and tiramisu making class. These premium attractions can at present only be enjoyed as part of a 4, 5, 6, or 7 attraction pass. While this might be a great option for many visitors, it does limit planning flexibility.

Any special exhibits you encounter at any of the attractions along the way will more than likely not be covered by your Rome Explorer Pass. It tends to just provide general admission entry, meaning you’ll have to pay out of pocket for any extra add-ons you want to enjoy during your outing.

Get Your Money’s Worth with a Rome Explorer Pass

The Rome Explorer Pass bills itself as saving customers nearly 50% on their tour costs. This means you’ll pay about half as much in advance for the single Rome Explorer Pass than you would if you paid for admission individually at each and every attraction you want to visit while in Rome.

To see how other people have put together itineraries that get them to all of Rome’s many treasures while also maximizing their savings, visit the “Customer Savings” tab on the Rome Explorer Pass official website. There you’ll find customer testimonials and other helpful examples of how to get the most bang for your buck.

It is most often the case that you’ll actually receive a better deal on a longer-term Rome Explorer Pass. If you have the time and money, consider one of the 4-attraction (or higher) passes. That way you’ll save more money, as well as have access to the premium attractions.

When in doubt, use your Rome Explorer Pass to visit the most expensive attractions. That way, if you still want to do even more things while in Rome, you’ll only have the less-expensive attractions left to pay for out of pocket.

Insider Rome Explorer Pass Tips

While the Rome Explorer Pass is the only ticket you need at a number of Rome’s most beloved attractions, you’ll still need to make reservations at many places—including, for example, the Saint Peter’s Dome Climb, Basilica and Vatacombs tour. You won’t be charged more for making these reservations—even if they request your credit card information, it’s just to guarantee your spot—but they are necessary for using your Rome Explorer Pass where applicable.

Keep in mind as you plan your trip, that the Rome Explorer Pass has very intense standards for who counts as being eligible for a “child pass.” Anyone over the age of six years old must purchase a full-price adult pass, so consider that reality as you prepare your trip’s budget.

Rome’s most famous attractions can get really busy and crowded, especially during peak times of the year for tourists. As a result, if you want to experience such attractions on your own terms—with at least moderately less crowd sizes swirling all around you—consider when possible visiting the attractions you’re most interested in during the early morning hours. That’s when they’ll tend to be less busy.

Where to Buy the Rome Explorer Pass

The Rome Explorer Pass is sold by many online vendors as well as many concierges in Rome but will pay full price. You can get a nice discount if you buy it at the official site and wait for a sale online.
