How the Boston Explorer Pass Works

The Boston Explorer Pass by Go City Card is an all-digital product. Just purchase your Boston Explorer Pass, download it to your smartphone, and have it scanned at the entrance gate of the attraction you want to visit. It’s really that simple.

The Boston Explorer Pass may be purchased as a 3, 4, or 5 attraction pass. You’ll be able to choose what attractions you want to visit from a list of over 20 possible attractions.

As an all-digital product, the Boston Explorer Pass is designed to work on all smartphones via the Go City mobile app. This free app can be downloaded directly to your smartphone. The Boston Explorer Pass can also be printed out, too.

Once you’ve purchased your Boston Explorer Pass, you’ll have an entire year to activate it. Then once you’ve activated your Boston Explorer Pass, you’ll have 30 days to use it.

What’s Good?

With the Boston Explorer Pass, the days of buying a travel pass and then sitting at home waiting for it to be delivered—or needing to go pick it up in person as soon as you arrive in the city—are over. That’s because with the Boston Explorer Pass you don’t need to remember to take anything with you except your smartphone.

Not only is this incredibly convenient and environmentally friendly, but it increases your scheduling flexibility. Because you can instantly access your Boston Explorer Pass right after you purchase it, you can wait until the pass is available at a discounted rate to buy it. This makes it great for both visitors and locals alike.

The Boston Explorer Pass also comes with a complimentary guidebook. This digital guidebook can be downloaded straight to the device of your choice, and is a great way to become more familiar with the city. It includes all sorts of helpful information, including maps, attraction hours, contact information, and more.

What Could Get Better?

Boston is home to a wonderful selection of museums, and the Boston Explorer Pass is your ticket to a great many of them. However, it is worth noting that the Boston Explorer Pass is unlikely to cover any special exhibits or behind-the-scenes tours offered at these institutions. For instance, your Boston Explorer Pass will get you in the door at the Museum of Fine Arts, but it won’t necessarily cover your admission to that big special exhibit they’re hosting that you’re just dying to see. That’ll run you extra out of pocket.

You must select the denomination of your Boston Explorer Pass at the time of purchase. You also cannot add or subtract any attractions later. While most customers don’t find these terms to be a big problem, some individuals wish there was a bit more flexibility offered by the Boston Explorer Pass in this regard.

Last but not least, while many people love the ease and flexibility with which the Boston Explorer Pass can be used via the Go City mobile app on any smartphone, some customers do resent needing to download yet another app. Keep in mind, though, that if this bothers you, you can also just print out your Boston Explorer Pass at home and have your paper copy scanned at each attraction.

If you really want to experience it all try a Go Boston Card which has more included attractions and some premium inclusions. If you want to visit a few of Boston’s biggest tourist attractions, try the Boston CityPass

Get Your Money’s Worth with a Boston Explorer Pass

At present, the Boston Explorer Pass bills itself as offering customers savings of nearly 40%. This number is based on comparing the price of the Boston Explorer Pass to the price of admission paid separately at each individual attraction.

The most important rule for maximizing your savings with the Boston Explorer Pass is to only use it to visit those attractions with the most expensive list prices. This way, if you end up deciding to do more than is covered by your Explorer Pass, you can always just pay out of pocket—but only at the less-expensive attractions.
