How the Vienna Pass Works

Simply purchase the Vienna Pass online. Then decide whether you want to pick it up when you arrive in Vienna, or have it delivered to your home.

If you’d prefer a digital Vienna Pass, you can download the Vienna Guide app. This will allow you to download your Vienna Pass straight to your smartphone.

The Vienna Pass is good for either 1, 2, 3, or 6 days. Included with the Vienna Pass is admission to over 60 top Vienna attractions.

Once you have your Vienna Pass in hand, you’ll have to pay nothing out of pocket at any of the city’s most popular spots. All you’ll need to do is present your pass, get it scanned, and enjoy!

The Vienna Pass works for consecutive days. This means that if you buy a 3-day pass and activate it on a Thursday, you must use that pass on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The Vienna Pass is valid for up to 12 months from the time of purchase.

What’s Good?

Sightseeing doesn’t get much easier than with the Vienna Pass. As a pre-paid, multi-attraction vacation pass, the Vienna Pass ensures that you can visit a whole host of famous Vienna attractions with a single card—you’ll never need to present any sort of payment at nearly 60 different acclaimed sites throughout the city.

Because the Vienna Pass may be used for up to one year from the time of purchase, there’s no need to rush. You can buy the pass whenever it best suits your needs or budget—and keep in mind the Vienna Pass goes on-sale often—and then wait to use it until the time is perfect for your schedule.

A Vienna Travelcard may also be added to your Vienna Pass. While this will run you a bit extra, for many travelers the added expense will be well worth it. The Travelcard is available for 1, 2, or 3 days, and covers unlimited travel throughout Vienna’s public transportation system. This includes all trains, buses, and trams running throughout the city.

Your Vienna Pass sold by Leisure Pass Group also includes a free digital guidebook. At over 100 pages of content, this complimentary guidebook offers up a tremendous wealth of knowledge for visitors. It can be downloaded directly to your digital device of choice, and includes maps, attraction information, and a primer on the city’s fashion, art, and design scene.

What Could Get Better?

Unlike some other similar travel cards available in other markets, the Vienna Pass is not currently offered in a digital format unless you download the Vienna Guide app. If you don’t want to add another app to your phone, you’ll have to either wait at home for your pass to be shipped to you before your trip, or you’ll need to pick up the pass when you arrive in Vienna. Both of these methods work fine, but you won’t have quite as much schedule flexibility as you would using the pass in an all-digital format.

This is probably not a big deal for those visitors buying shorter passes, but the fact that the Vienna Pass must be used on consecutive days might not appeal to some travelers. For instance, if you’re interested in the 6-day Vienna Pass, it can be frustrating to be locked into 6 straight days of sightseeing without having the ability to go on a day trip elsewhere in Europe. Note that the pricing per day drops a lot when you have a longer duration card enabling you to still get value even if you take a day off from sightseeing.

Vienna is home to a world-class assortment of museums and attractions, and your Vienna Pass will get you to nearly all of them. That said, many popular attractions—like, for example, Schönbrunn Zoo—feature a variety of special exhibits and experiences that will not be covered by your Vienna Pass. You’ll have to pay extra if you want to enjoy these add-ons. We suggest visiting at the beginning or end of your trip so you don’t go on a day the Vienna Pass is active.

Get Your Money’s Worth with a Vienna Pass

One of the calling cards of the Vienna Pass experience is the significant savings it offers users. These savings are calculated based on comparing how much you’d pay out of pocket to visit each attraction individually to how much you pay for the single Vienna Pass covering all the attractions together.

Even for the most budget-minded, it can be hard to get a handle on just how much money saved we’re talking about here. Fortunately, the official Vienna Pass website has a number of sample itineraries that spell out ways to plan excursions that maximize your savings.

Make sure to activate your Vienna Pass first thing in the morning. This will help you make the most of your pass and money. If you activate your Vienna Pass in the evening, that will still count as a full day used—so make certain to start your sightseeing as early in the day as you can.

No matter how active you are during your trip, you might not have time to see everything you want to see across the duration of your Vienna Pass. Thus, make sure to use your Vienna Pass first and foremost for the most expensive attractions. Then, if you still want to tour other attractions, you can simply pay out of pocket at only the cheapest admission rates.

Insider Vienna Pass Tips

Schönbrunn Palace is one of Vienna’s many must-see attractions. As such, it can get incredibly busy at times. When planning your visit, it’s important to know that Schönbrunn Palace operates on a system of timed entry. The earlier in the day you visit, the more likely you are to either get in without too long of a wait, or the more time you’ll have left in the day to catch a later tour if it’s booked up when you first arrive.

Many of Vienna’s most beloved sites—including Hofburg Imperial Palace—have hours that vary seasonally. Make sure to keep this in mind as you design your outing.

Schönbrunn Zoo is home to many delightful animals, as well as a remarkable train that the whole family will love. However, in particular it is notable for being one of the few zoos in the world where you’ll find pandas! If you love everyone’s favorite black-and-white bears, you won’t want to miss this fun attraction.

Don’t forget that your Vienna Pass entitles you to fast-track entry at many places throughout the city. In advance of your visit, you’ll want to pay attention to whether or not this applies to the places you most want to see.

If you’re looking for a special dining experience, consider the restaurant located at the top of the Danube Tower. While often busy and crowded, it is a special place—the restaurant actually rotates, offering guests spectacular views of the city in all directions, regardless of where they are initially seated!

Where to Buy the Vienna Pass
