Can’t decide between a land-based tour and a maritime tour of the San Diego area? Well, you don’t have to. With San Diego SEAL Tours, guests are treated to a unique land and sea excursion conducted in one vehicle over a 90 minute period. From glimpsing the sea lions and other marine life of the San Diego coast line to great views of Point Loma, Shelter Island, and the Marine Mammal Training Center, a trip with San Diego SEAL Tours is a great addition to any southern California adventure.

History

As a part of the Old Town Trolley Tours group, the idea for San Diego SEAL Tours came about as a logical extension of the land-based service already provided by CEO Chris Belland. In order to enhance his offerings to San Diego visitors, Chris planned on a tour that integrated both the land and water of San Diego into one, beautiful whole through the use of a Hydra Terra vehicle. The plan for San Diego SEAL Tours was then put together over lunch with the company’s COO.

The name of San Diego SEAL Tours is a tribute to the role that San Diego has played as the home to the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet. Like the Navy, SEAL stands for SEAnd Land. Therefore, the name “SEAL” is both an homage to the Navy SEALs that call the San Diego area home as well as the cute marine life that frequent its shores, although tourists are more likely to see sea lions on the SEAL tour.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the SEAL tour, however, is its Hydra Terra vehicles. Produced by Cool Amphibious Manufacturers International (C.A.M.I.), this unique m

eans of transportation combines the cap of a Ford F-series truck with a Caterpillar 210 hp 7.1 litre Turbo Diesel engine and a hull constructed to American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards and approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. Each vehicle is 39 feet long and approximately 8.5 feet wide. Passengers sit four to a row with an aisle down the middle. A personal flotation device (PFD) is available below each seat. In addition, the passenger compartment has been covered with lightweight clear poly carbonate sheeting which allows for excellent and clear viewing opportunities from all sides.

Main Attraction

San Diego SEAL Tours operate year-round, though they are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the winter months (November-March). Each tour lasts a full 90 minutes with 30 minutes dedicated to land and 60 minutes spent at sea. The entire tour is narrated by experienced guides and provided by Coast Guard-approved captains. Tours depart from Sea Port Village at 500 Kettner Blvd.

There are several highlights to the SEAL Tour. This includes seasonal stops at the San Diego Maritime Museum and the Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing vessel. The tour continues from Sea Port Village around Harbor Drive, allowing for great views of Coronado Island and Harbor Island. It takes to Sea off of Shelter Island and continues along a loop which provides additional views of marine life such as sea lions, brown pelicans and even dolphins on occasions. Additional sights include Point Loma, the North (Coronado) Island Air Station, and Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

Tickets for the SEAL tour are available for adults 13+ and children 4-12. Children under 4 are free. In addition, the tour company offers a 100% Money Back Guarantee which ensures guests a full refund should they be dissatisfied with their tour experience.

Why It’s a Must-See

The unique opportunity to spend time both on land and at sea in the heart of San Diego is certainly special. Though there are many other tour companies out there that offer similar, separate services, the Hydra Terra vehicles of the San Diego SEAL Tours are truly one-of-a-kind and offer unique and amazing opportunities for visitors.
