One of Oahu’s most famous beaches, Kailua Beach Park is a great place for anyone who loves outdoor athletics and water sports. The family—friendly beach park is located in Ko’olaupoko District of Oahu at Kailua Bay. Kailua is Hawaiian for two seas or two currents, named for the two lagoons, or two currents, that run through the bay. It is estimated that Kailua has been populated for over 1500 years.

The Finest American Beach

Kailua Beach Park is considered to be the best beach in all of Hawaii, and definitely one of the top five beaches in the United States. It’s easy to see why Kailua Beach is a top pick for both tourists and locals: it has something for everyone. From May until September, watch out for the Portuguese Man—O—War, or jellyfish and for stinging limu, or seaweed. Not quite as crowded and congested as Waikiki Beach, there is ample space along the two—mile stretch of white—sanded coastline. Kailua Beach Park features include:

  • Restrooms and showers
  • Picnic areas
  • On—duty lifeguards
  • Phones
  • Nearby bird sanctuary
  • Free parking

There are no high waves at this beach, which makes it a safe place to take small children. The water is warm, and visitors always comment on the bay’s striking blue—green color. Swimming kayaking and bodysurfing are popular activities at Kailua Beach Park. There’s not much in the way of snorkeling, but you will likely see some scattered fish if you choose to snorkel.  It’s a good idea to arrive early to find a spot on the beach and a good parking spot— this is a popular swim spot so the beach can fill up quickly. Kailua Beach Park is also walking distance from the town of Kailua, where you can find a number of shops, restaurants and cafes.
