What Could get better?
The big omission from the Go San Francisco Card’s offerings is an Alcatraz Tour. While they do offer an “Escape from the Rock” Cruise, this cruise doesn’t stop on the island. There is only one “Authorized” company that sells tickets to Alcatraz.
If you do want to see Alcatraz, Smart Destinations has a special offer in place. Purchase the card directly through Alcatraz Cruises and pick it up at Pier 33. With this card, you get one-time admission to the cellhouse audio tour of Alcatraz Island, plus round trip ferry transportation including all national park fees. The downside is you will not be able to get a digital pass if purchased through Alcatraz Cruises. You wont’ be able to visit any other attractions before you pick up your pass.
It would also be nice if the Go San Francisco Card offered cable car tickets, as it did in the past. Ticket prices for a ride on the historic cable cars are pretty modest, though, so it’s not a big additional burden to add that onto the cost of your card and other expenses.
Get Your Money’s Worth
Generally speaking, you’ll get more value out of your Go San Francisco Card if you visit more attractions. A good rule of thumb is to visit between 2-3 attractions per day to maximize your savings with the card. For example, cardholders who visit six attractions with the 3-Day Go San Francisco Card can save up to 50%!
However, for longer duration cards, you can actually get the same value by visiting fewer attractions per day. For example, you’ll only need to visit one or two attractions per day with a 7-Day Go San Francisco Card to get your money’s worth.
You also maximize your savings by choosing some more expensive attractions in conjunction with some smaller ones. For example, wine country tours and visits to theme parks often come with a higher gate price, so you’re getting more value if you opt for those over a small local museum.
San Francisco is a little spread out, so concentrate your daily explorations in a particular area each day. Spend a day in Fisherman’s Wharf, another downtown, and the third day in the Golden Gate Park neighborhood. However, if you’re only in town for a day, use the Muni (their transit system) to get around rather than driving.
Insider Go San Francisco Card Tips
Your Go San Francisco Card is activated by the first attraction you visit, so be sure you’re ready to begin explorations when you visit that first attraction.
The card is purchased for a certain number of consecutive calendar days (not 24-hour increments). So, for example, if you activate your card at 4 pm on a given day, it will count as one day on your card. Your best bet is to get an early start and visit your first attraction as soon as it opens. As another added benefit, your cards are good all day, as long as the attractions are open.
As mentioned above, San Francisco is a sprawling city with several distinct neighborhoods. Opt to either visit one area per day (reducing your travel), or, if you really want to visit multiple attractions in different neighborhoods, check out the Muni system to save time and money.
If you plan well and are aware of the included extras – at shopping venues, for example – you can save a lot of money on souvenirs. However, you should be aware that some places will scan your card in order to process the discount, which will activate the card, so be sure to use the card for discounts on days you will be visiting attractions.
