History of Moco Museum<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Though Amsterdam\u2019s Moco Museum has only been in operation since 2016, the Museumplein space it occupies today has a long, rich history. Moco Museum currently calls Villa Alsberg home, a stately townhome located next door to the Van Gogh Museum, just down the block from the Stedelijk Museum<\/a><\/strong>, and a charming three-minute stroll away from the Rijksmuseum<\/a><\/strong>. In fact, Villa Alsberg was originally the home of Eduard Cuypers, a Dutch architect whose influential workshop is often credited with developing the distinctive Amsterdam School of architecture during the first three decades of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eduard Cuypers\u2014who was the nephew of Pierre Cuypers, the acclaimed architect most famous for designing Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum\u2014designed the Villa himself, and it was in the family\u2019s possession until 1939. From that point, the Villa served at one time or another as a home for priests, a religious school, and as a suite of law offices. Due to the historic nature of the facility, Moco Museum lacks elevators; as a result, the attraction is not accessible to those individuals in wheelchairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
